Auction Watch

Canterbury Auction Galleries will be auctioning this sampler at their sale on 6/7 December. Lot 940 is an early 19th Century needlework sampler worked by Ann Gore, Waldershare School, Aged 10 Years, February 28. The whole is finely worked in coloured silks with alphabet, six line verse, baskets of flowers, birds, etc, on fine woollen ground. It measures 13.25ins x 12.25ins and is slightly mothed and discoloured in places. It has a later oak glazed frame. The sampler comes with a copy of The Holy Bible, printed by George E. Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode, London 1842, inscribed to front "Ann Gore, given to her on her marriage by her affectionate cousin, Elizabeth Port 1845" (binding somewhat damaged). At auction at Gorringes at their 7/8 December sale is this George IV needlework sampler, by Ann Child, 1824, worked with house, gardens, verse, Adam and Eve. It features a dog named `Bob` just to the left of the circular lawn bordered by the driveway. It is Lot 183 and measures 16 x 19.5in and has an estimate of £1,000 - £1,500. Lot 1323 for sale at Taylors Auctions is this unframed embroidered sampler depicting Adam & Eve in landscape scenes by Charlotte Leeson, dated 1845. It measures 53cm x 64cm (approximately 21 inches x 26 inches) and has an estimate of £100 - £200. For more details click here.
At Batemans Auctions on 3 December there is Lot 428 - a George III sampler by Ann Ross, dated 1786, decorated with the most amazingly primitive trees, animals, figures and birds within the Garden of Eden. It is framed and glazed and measures 60 by 48cm (24 inches x 19 inches approximately) and has an estimate of £700 - £800. For more details click here.
For lovers of maps there is Lot 928 for auction on 6/7 December at Mealys on the Isle of Man. It is a finely worked needlework map of `The Isle of Man,` after John Speed. It measures 14 3/4" x 19 3/4" (37cms x 50cms). and has an estimate of €180 - €200. For more details click here.
