Dorothy Dunnett book. She is a wonderful, engaging writer, well-grounded in early history and, in particular, mercantile exchange across Europe with relevance to dyestuffs such as alum. The geographic scope of the books ranges between Scotland, Burgundian Flanders, the Tyrol, Medici Florence, Naples, Venice, Cyprus and ... Trebizond! There are six volumes in this series and I am well into the last book, though trying now to go as slowly as possibly since Dorothy is dead and there will be no more books to follow on! If you are looking for something to wrap yourself around and be spellbound over the holiday, then I do recommend Dorothy's books.
